COFFEE

Aah! Coffee. It's heavenly aroma tantalizing your senses. A treat for your tastebuds and your sleep-deprived soul. Not to mention the age-old battle it has with its sibling, tea.

Honestly, there exist people who like both. I'm one of them. But, let's talk about coffee today.

Elite coffee drinkers are number two on the 'pretentious' list. The first being 'wine tasters'.

As for my coffee preference, I like it as dark as my soul. Okay, that was pretentious. Let's try that again. I like my coffee as dark as Vantablack. Okay. No...that was nerdy AND pretentious. Way worse.

The people who like black coffee with no milk, no sugar, are in an entire cult of their own. I sometimes imagine them being lazy, that's why they don't put in sugar or milk. I'm lazy too. Might explain why I prefer a café noir.

Enough with all of this business. I'll cut straight to the chase. This succulent is going to help you learn about different coffee types. So, buckle up and enjoy the montage.

TYPES OF COFFEE BEANS:

1. ARABICA: It's the most popular coffee bean in the world. It has a sweet taste. Might explain why it makes an awesome black coffee. It apparently has less caffeine than Robusta.

2.ROBUSTA: As the name suggests, it is high in caffeine and keeps you awake. The name 'kinda sounds like a WWE wrestler's name whose primary job is to slap you if you fall asleep at work. Coincidently, that’s what the coffee does too. Robusta is also cheaper and bitter as compared to Arabica.

TYPES OF COFFEE DRINKS:

1. BLACK(café noir): The simplest and most effective. Low calories too. A classic. Just some coffee beans infused in water. That's all. You dare put sugar in that though.

2. Café au Lait: In French, it literally just means coffee(café) with (au) milk (lait). Simpleton.

3. ESPRESSO: Contrary to popular belief, espresso is not the same as black coffee. It's more finely grounded and denser. Quite the 'crème de la crème'. I can imagine espresso being the kind of sibling bragging about its trip to France, while black is humbly listening to the fabrication.

4. AMERICANO: This guy is nothing special. Just a dilute version of espresso. Quite a copycat if you ask me. Espresso lovers might consider it a knockoff.

5. LATTE: The most popular, preppy coffee drink out there. I would have termed black coffee as goth if it were not the favorite beverage of most businessmen. Latte is a shot of espresso, steamed milk, and some foam. Add all the sugar you want in this one. You can also add additional flavors like vanilla, butterscotch, pumpkin spice. It's the kind of sibling who has a lot of personalities. The adding of different flavors reminds me of a person that can fit in any crowd. Mutable, like water.

6. CAPPUCCINO: Yummy. Definitely. Similar to a latte. It has more foam than a latte. Cocao powder or cinnamon is sprinkled on top. So, instead of calling it a 'cocoa-cinnamon Latte' it has received a knighthood and is called 'Cappucino'.

7. MOCHA: It's a chocolate latte. Period. That's all I have to say about this guy.

8. FLAT WHITE: Born in Australia. Expresso with steamed milk. No foam. Basically, the uptight twin of Latte. No foam, no fun.

9. AFFOGATO: First time I'm hearing this, not 'gonna lie, but, it's delish! Ice cream with a shot of espresso. Sounds more like a desert really.

10. IRISH: Black coffee, whiskey, sugar, and whipped cream. When it's Irish, there's 'gotta be liquor.

11. ICED COFFEE/ICED ESPRESSO: Pretty much like the name. Coffee+Ice. The dope cool sibling of the sizzling hot coffee.

12. COLD BREW: It's greatest benefit? It's less acidic and much sweeter than hot brewed coffee. Looks like 'hot brew' is the 'Wicked Witch of the West' while 'cold brew' is her sweeter sister Glinda, 'Good Witch of the South'. You can adjust the strength of the concentration as per your liking. Happy potion making!

13. NITRO: The name is pretty revealing. In short, it's a type of coffee where 'cold brew' has nitrogen gas bubbled into it. Synonymous with the way the cars get a nitro boost in 'Asphalt 8'.

14.FRAPPUCCINO(Frappé): The coffee star got its big break when it was introduced by its 'talent manager' - Starbucks. It's a smooth blended ice coffee with whipped cream and syrup. It was originally quite popular in Greece. Classy.

15. PUPPACHINO: This one is worth a mention. It's an adorable 'initiative' by Starbucks. Whipped cream in cutesy cups for our doggie friends to enjoy. Very instagrammable. Quite ingenious marketing I might say. Usually, puppies are happy to lick anything.

16. GREEN COFFEE: It is unroasted coffee bean powder. Quite the naive coffee, not aware of the way of the world. Not yet roasted. Consumed like green tea with only water, it also helps in controlling metabolism.

17. DALGONA COFFEE: I'm pissed at this coffee. Pure personal prejudice. This is THE quarantine coffee. I don't wanna talk about it. This is all I want to say.

*BONUS*

INDIAN FILTER COFFEE (Kaapi):

Aah. Saved the best for the last. High levels of prejudice here. This is my favorite coffee. I've grown up drinking this.

The coffee blend is roasted coffee ground finely. It also contains a certain percent of chicory.

Chicory is a flowering plant of the dandelion family. It tastes similar to coffee but has a slightly woody-nutty flavor.

Connoisseurs swear by the percentage of chicory added to enhance the coffee flavor. The percentage differs for every connoisseur.

Popularised in Madras (Chennai), it's a South Indian beverage served steaming-hot in a cup and saucer. Pronounced Kaapi. Cute.

As the name suggests the procedure, hot water is poured over the coffee blend kept in a filter. The concentrate (decoction) is served with milk and sugar.

Coffee is definitely a liquid hug for your brain. Go get yourself a cup!

Huh? What happened? I swear I’m awake now.

Great.

I slept on the keyboard.

I need coffee.

Coffee article is very interesting! We had tasted some varieties mentioned here at Star Bucks when we were abroad but as you say, our kaapi tops in our (Madrasi!) list. We don't like to have it in cup and saucer. We have it in dubura tumbler as in the picture here. No sugar or with less sugar.

Very well written Sayali!
